I stayed at Gran Meliá from Friday to Sunday. On Saturday night, around 8:00pm I went to Tempo Restaurant for dinner. They were 3 couples ahead of us in line. I overheard when the hostess DENIED THEM SITTING because according to her the restaurant was booked until 9:30pm. When she gave us the same explanation, I called to her attention that the restaurant was EMPTY (they had between 15 to 18 empty tables!!!). She replied that none of the reservations had been cancelled and insisted that we could NOT be seated. Since reservations are automatically cancelled after 15 minutes if people do not show up, I told her that I would wait for any automatic cancellation; she still told us that our party of 2 could NOT be seated.
We decided to visit a restaurant in a nearby hotel, but the heavy rain did not allow us to leave. When we returned to the restaurant area we realized that some tourists were ALSO DENIED a table. They had complained to an employee; she returned and told them “I worked my magic and got you a table.” I told her that we had the same situation, but she said that she could NOT do anything about it. The tourists said: “Please, seat them because they were here first”. I politely declined because I did not want interrupt their evening. Then they insisted that we seat with them so we could eat.
This was all happening in front of the employee, who did not even seem to care. I felt extremely embarrassed for the POOR SERVICE the Gran Meliá was providing to tourists.
I told the employee that we still needed a place to have dinner. She went back inside the restaurant. After a couple of minutes she came back out and told us in a VERY RUDE manner that we were going to be seated. I responded that after practically begging for a table and being poorly treated by the personnel, I was only accepting the table because I did not have a choice. If it had not been for the heavy rain, I would have left to eat somewhere else. I need to point out that the employee who “assisted” us was ROLLING HER EYES to the hostess as she spoke with us. This was very offensive and should be unacceptable by the hotel management.
Finally, I ordered a risotto that cost $32. To my surprise it was ready in 10 min. After all the hassle, my dish was inedible (the risotto was in a very watery sauce and the lobster had the texture of rubber!). I noticed that the tourists from the next table did NOT EAT THEIR FOOD. The food was NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Considering the prices of the food, I was expecting quality. TEMPO ONLY OFFERS BAD SERVICE AND BAD FOOD!
I was embarrassed for the business and for the POOR IMPRESSION it made on their guests. It’s a shame that a hotel with such renowned name is DAMAGING the image of hospitality and tourism in Puerto Rico.
